Wine BEFORE lymphoma diagnosis prevents relapse.
The question I get most often as an oncologist is "Is there anything else I can do to prevent a recurrence of my cancer?" So far the answers are few and far between. If you'd asked me about two years ago I would have said that a low-fat diet would prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. The work is still being done on that question but two studies have failed to confirm the initial promising results so I have stopped giving that advice. Wine consumption prior to a lymphoma diagnosis is protective according to a research paper presented at the AACR annual meeting going on now. AACR is the American Association for Cancer Research. The AACR was an offshoot of ASCO the American Society of Clinical Oncology. AACR was started by cancer researchers who deemed the science at ASCO too "soft" and clinically oriented. How we ended up with wine and lymphoma at AACR instead of ASCO is a bit mystifying. Anyway the AACR press release is coy and does not say whether wine consumption AFTER lymphoma diagnosis. This is really what people want to know and by the absence of a mention in the article one would have to assume that there was no benefit to wine consumption after lymphoma diagnosis. So if you end up with a lymphoma diagnosis be sure to start drinking wine a few months prior!
