Stem cell therapy strikes again, this time in cardiology. Researchers in Brazil directly injected bone marrow stem cells into the left ventricle, in patients with refractory angina or heart pain. These patients had undergone surgery, angioplasty and medical treatment, but had ongoing chest pain.
The researchers, led by a guy named Dr. Hossne, found that patients had improvements in their pain after a few months, and these improvements were sustained.
The abstract and writeup on EurekAlert are both of some interest.
I would like to emphasize stem cell therapy as a theme on this site, to encompass stem cell transplantation, as well as regenerative medicine. Ultimately, these technologies will be the way we practice medicine.
