Nausea drug may be effective for treating narcotic withdrawal
I worry about the issue of narcotics dependence quite a bit in my practice so it's exciting to see a report today that a commonly used nausea drug Zofran (recently generic as ondansetron) can be used to treat narcotics dependence. The study only looked at treating a small number of subjects but the finding was that the withdrawal syndrome was improved. Hooray! This was originally the idea behind heroin then methadone: find a non-toxic non-addictive medicine that would enable people addicted to narcotics to safely stop using the drugs without suffering through the horrible process of "coming down" off the high these drugs produced. Perhaps this new finding points the way to new progress here. http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20090219/hl_hsn/nauseadrugshowspromiseagains...
