Chemistry meeting: probiotic yogurt treats H. Pylori
Forget antibiotics to treat the common H. Pylori infection of the stomach: in the future we might be prescribing yogurt. A product found on supermarket shelves may be effective in fighting H. Pylori a bacteria found in the guts of millions of people all over the world. This bacteria has been known to associate with autoimmune problems like low platelets and even a rare lymphoma known as MALT-oma. The probiotic concept is that we need to reregulate the balance of bacteria in our guts to prevent illnesses and there has been some scattered successes in the past. Looks like we are getting another good story here though the study was small. Right now we prescribe the "Prev-Pack " which is a combination of antibiotics and acid-blocking medicine. Perhaps in a few years we will be using yogurt to combat this problem! Pity the chemists are getting the credit for this one. http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE52M5JA20090323?feedType... First Dave Snow wants to take prescribing decisions away from docs now chemists want to teach us a thing or two about fighting H. Pylori! I'm happy for the help no matter the source.
